Aubrey Lures started in March 1998 while on a fishing trip to Bazaruto Lodge in Mocambique. David Lilford & I (Charlie Lilford) made a couple of wooden Plugs. Total 20 which we took to the island to fish for Kingfish (Giant Trevally). They were all sliding plugs being the plug could run up the leader line, so when you hook a game fish the fish throws it's head trying to dislodge the hook. The plug then moves up the line leaving the hook firmly attached. The first morning David & I got up at 04h00 & started the long drive down to the south point of the island +- 45kmh's. We arrived at 05h20 on David's second cast he hooked a big Gt after a ferocious battle the fish was tagged & released+-30kg. We tagged a further 6 Gt's in the morning ranging between 20 & 35kg's. On arriving back at the lodge we where speaking to Louis Erasmus, manager of the lodge telling him how well these plugs (surface lures) worked. We then showed him the video footage before he believed us. In the week at the lodge we tagged & released 28 Gt's. The Photo's are still at the lodge to this day. On leaving the lodge Lewis Erasmus said what are you going to call these lures, He suggested Aubrey Da Gama because Charlie always says Aubrey Da Gamma to the staff instead of Obrigado (The Portugese word for thank you!)
We said that sounds good & so the name Aubrey Da Gama came about.
